Chapter Nine

“He said no?”

Evan held a foamy latte in one hand and a dish towel in the other as he stared incredulously at Tabby. It was the following Thursday morning and she had been mulling over her day trip to Ty Treadwell’s Family Fun Park for the last two days. She felt silly for even going there on her day off in the first place, but Donnie had seemed happy to see her. They had fun for a while, and then she had to go and ruin everything by asking him to go to the drive-in. She was acting too eager. Too clingy. She was pushing him away.

“He said maybe,” she moaned. “It was ridiculous of me to ask him anyway. He’s my boss. I’m probably making him feel awkward.”

“I saw you two at dinner the other night,” Evan protested, setting down the coffee on the counter. “He looked very comfortable. Cinnamon spice latte for Ashley!”

“I know, I know,” Tabby said, biting her lower lip. “He wouldn’t hang out with me if he didn’t want to.”

“You two had chemistry. Like, hot, hot, chemistry,” Evan said, mimicking a chef’s kiss into the air. “Oh, I could have cut the tension between you two with a knife.”

“So what am I doing wrong then?” Tabby said. “Not to sound conceited, but my approach usually works on guys. Maybe he’s not romantically interested in me.”

“Or, maybe he’s being a gentleman,” Evan said. “Workplace relationships can be a gray area. It’s a strange landscape to navigate.”

“I know. That’s why I feel so bad. I should have left him alone,” she said, leaning on the counter. “It’s just... it’s been a long time since I connected with someone like that. It’s intoxicating, you know?”

Evan let out a deep sigh through his nose and frowned. “No, not really,” he said. “But I’m keeping the hope alive.”

Tabby gave him a sad half smile. “I suppose,” she said. “At least I haven’t scared you off yet.”

“You’re stuck with me until they hire me at The Royal Palm Dinner Theater,” Evan said, adding a dollop of cream to the coffee he was preparing. “Caramel creme for Donna!”

“Oh, I’m off early again today,” Tabby said, checking the time on her phone. “My uncle is coming by the house and I need to talk to him before my shift at the Haunted Hike tonight.”

“Okay, but you owe me,” Evan said. “There’s an audition for White Christmas next week and I’ve been practicing my Bing Crosby impersonation.”

“Deal,” she said. “Tell me when and I’ll cover for you.”

“Go,” Evan said, shooing her off. “And don’t feel too bad about thirsting after your boss. You certainly wouldn’t be the first.”

“Thanks,” Tabby laughed, untying her apron. “Okay, I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow morning.”

“Bye,” Evan said, sliding another coffee on the counter. “Black coffee for Dennis!”

Tabby stepped out onto First Avenue where her mother’s car was thankfully waiting at the curb. With Uncle Steve coming to the house in the afternoon, her mother had agreed to let her borrow the car so she could save time with her commute.
